Teams

Deployed personnel generally work in team environments, and teams can be important sources of emotional and practical social support.49 The importance of teamwork has long been recognized, and military organizations have a strong focus on team processes and building team cohesion.50 Effective teams have consensus about their goals and priorities, a strong focus on cooperation and a sense of shared identity and community, all of which can help lead to growth outcomes. Team-based planning and teamwork can boost resilience by supporting realistic interpretation of what can be achieved, providing opportunities to discuss events and monitor reactions, and offering support.51 Team activities can also contribute to growth through acceptance of challenges and cooperation to resolve problems, while team cohesion helps maintain morale, health, and a sense of achievement.52 Over time, team members become more accurate in recognizing the skills and abilities of other team members and place more trust in their teams;53 established teams tend to perform at a higher level than others.54 Military units may be seen as “family,” sharing dependence and commitment to each other during deployment. Rather than sharing military experiences with family, personnel may rely on comrades who have been through the same experiences to provide social support. It is common for reminiscences to be about positive rather than traumatic or negative experiences, suggesting that this process of sharing may be part of the reappraisal and meaning-making that fosters well-being in returned personnel. However, when teams disband or are restructured, feelings of loss or grief can arise as the support networks and sense of team identity that acted as sources of resilience are lost. Organizational leaders need to consider how support resources can be put in place for those who are separating from established and trusted teams.
